With July 14th and the release of Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee one month away, I decided to read To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time since I was in the fifth or sixth grade. Back then I don’t think I really understood everything in the story all that well because I remember really not liking it and wondering why in the world my dad made me read it. This time around I really enjoyed it, finished it in less than a day (instead of what felt like forever) and hated how abruptly it ended while at the same time loving the ending. In short, To Kill a Mockingbird was all about timing for me.

Now that I’ve found that I actually do like To Kill a Mockingbird, however, I have a dilemma: whether or not I should read Go Set a Watchman.

For most readers, the answer is simple. If you like a book, read the sequel. If you really like a book, read the sequel ASAP!

For someone like me who is aware of different situations and goings-on behind the scenes in the publishing world, it’s trickier. Stories of authors behaving badly can tarnish a book even for those who try to keep authors and their books separate. But in the case of Go Set a Watchman and Harper Lee, it’s the possibility that Harper Lee’s wishes weren’t taken into account and she was instead taken advantage of that keeps reading Go Set a Watchman from being a certainty.

I am in no way saying that Harper Lee has been taken advantage of, but it is the fact that one cannot know for sure that has me on the fence about whether or not I’m going to pick up and read Go Set a Watchman.

What are everyone else’s opinions on the matter?

I am so very, very pleased with how well I did with the Bout of Books 13.0 Read-a-Thon! I read only 700 pages less than last year even though I joined the read-a-thon a day late and stopped reading four or so hours before midnight on the last day because of how exhausted I was.

I know I’m weeks late asking this, but how well did everyone else do? Or, how are you doing with your reading currently?

Wow! I cannot believe that I never posted my last Bout of Books update and the read-a-thon ended almost a month ago! I still have yet to fully calculate all my reading stats, but I will be doing so sometime tonight and then posting my wrap-up.

Since the readathon, I feel like I have been running around like a lunatic. My life this past month has consisted of two major work events, an early birthday celebration, along with my actual birthday, planning and attending BEA, and a mish-mash of other activities! Thankfully, none of this kept me from reading completely, although it did make me feel like my brain was mush at times. With one book, I had to go back and reread a whole bunch of pages because I wasn’t truly absorbing the story and another I didn’t even realize was a companion to a previous book I had read until almost halfway through – don’t ask me what I was thinking!

But now, for the time being, things are calming down again and I hope to be much more present here on my blog. I have a couple of reviews partially written, and notes for many others, so be on the look out for those and many more new posts!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon 13.0

Day 5 went by way too quickly for me! This whole read-a-thon has gone by too fast, in fact. I can’t believe it’s going to be over in less than 24 hours. 🙁

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon 13.0

Well, I did not meet my first goal for Day 3, but I was only 49 pages short of accomplishing it, so I still count that as a great success! I’ve also really been enjoying all of the books I’ve picked up so far this read-a-thon. One of the things I dislike most is when I pick up a book that I do not like or cannot get into, especially when I picked it up because I thought it has such great potential. So far, no disappointments in my choices!

Tomorrow looks as though I will have a particularly relaxing evening in which I can spend plenty of time reading, so long as I don’t become so relaxed I fall asleep early!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon 13.0

Wow! Day 1 (or at least my Day 1) of Bout of Books 13.0 is over!

So far I’m doing really well, managing to find time to read in addition to things I needed to do and get done. Hopefully this will stay true for the rest of the read-a-thon!

A more accurate title for this post might be “Finding My Way Back to the Blogging World…. ”

It has been a very long time since I last posted here on Readerly Musings, in the middle of my blogiversary celebration.

Unfortunately life got in the way of my reading life for a few months and has stayed in the way of my blogging life for even longer. It is my hope that Bout of Books 13.0 will be my way back into the world of blogging, though I will be starting out very slow!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon 13.0

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 13 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

My true goal for this read-a-thon is to not only read but also get back into blogging, though I do have a tentative TBR. If I manage to follow it and not read a book off the list, I will be very shocked! And, as always, I am being highly optimistic about how many books I will read…

My TBR

Miss Mayhem by Rachel Hawkins
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin
The Underground Labyrinth by Louella Dizon San Juan
Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Every Day by David Levithan
The Cult of Kronos by Amy Leigh Strickland

Happy reading, everyone!
